2026 Young Legend Finalist - St Joseph's Primary School Mangrove Warriors
Watering a mangrove seedling every morning and afternoon doesn't stop for a weekend or a school holiday. The Mangrove Warriors at St Joseph's Catholic Primary in Crib Point kept it up for four straight months.
The student leadership group grew out of the school's wider Sea is Our Best Friend program: once the whole Grade 3/4 cohort had planted mangrove seeds, the Mangrove Warriors took over daily care of the seedlings as they grew, watering, monitoring and troubleshooting, with school families pitching in to cover the gaps when students weren't at school. When the saplings were finally strong enough, the Mangrove Warriors and their classmates returned to Woolley's Beach to plant them alongside OzFish and the local Ranger, closing a loop the students had carried from seed to shoreline themselves.
What the school found is that four months of unglamorous daily watering taught the students something a single planting day never could: that conservation isn't an event, it's a habit that has to survive boredom, bad weather and a lack of applause.
The X-factor is the completeness of the journey. These students didn't learn about restoring an ecosystem. They restored one, on a schedule that didn't care whether it was a Tuesday or a Saturday.
