A lightning-struck Californian sequoia from Beechworth's Centennial Park is now seating in the town's revitalised Railway Precinct. That's the kind of detail that sums up this project.
Led by Indigo Shire Council and Tourism North East as part of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail Enhancements, the precinct has gone from an underused paddock to a landmark stop on the trail: nature play by Yackandandah sculptor Ben Gilbert, a public pavilion, accessible amenities, lighting upgrades and a freshly repainted skate bowl by artist Chris Henderson. Local granite boulders and washed river rock from a Porepunkah quarry were worked into the landscaping wherever possible.
The skate park redesign came out of direct youth engagement. Council's Youth Team asked local young people what they actually wanted, rather than guessing on their behalf, and it shows in a space that already feels claimed rather than imposed.
What the project proved: tourism infrastructure and everyday community use aren't in competition. A rest stop for cyclists doubles as somewhere Beechworth families already go on a Tuesday afternoon.
The X-factor is the storytelling woven through the design itself, playful narrative elements and local materials that turn a stopover into a place worth lingering in.
