What started as a Container Deposit Scheme collection point in Kyabram has turned into a small circular economy.
Kyabram Community and Learning Centre's Reuse and Renewal initiative now recovers containers for fundraising, paper and cardboard for fire starter bricks, and textiles through the "Rags in a Bag" program, while donated clothing, blankets and sleeping bags go straight to people who need them. A volunteer craft group turns spare fabric into quilts and beanies for premature babies and respite care residents. The Kyabram Men's Shed takes recycled timber and pallets and builds something useful out of them.
None of it happened all at once. It grew from a single fundraising idea for local schools and sporting clubs into a hub that also runs a Food Share program rescuing surplus food for people facing cost-of-living pressure, built through partnerships with local supermarkets, businesses and volunteers who kept showing up with new ideas.
The lesson from KCLC: sustainability initiatives work best when they're shaped by what the community actually needs, not just what's easiest to recycle.
The X-factor is that everything collected does double duty. A container becomes fundraising for a school. Cardboard becomes a fire starter. Fabric becomes a quilt for a newborn. Nothing here is just waste diversion. It's a second life, engineered on purpose.
