Quercus Beechworth Repair Cafe - 2026 Tidy Towns Finalists - EPA Waste Prevention and Reduction Finalist
Ten volunteer repairers, one Saturday morning a month, and a growing list of things Beechworth residents no longer throw away.
Since 2018, the Quercus Beechworth Repair Café has met in the Neighbourhood House hall to fix whatever locals bring in: garden tools, kitchen appliances, clothing, even a drone. The bike program has become a quiet favourite, ten bikes rescued from the tip mostly for spare parts, four fully repaired and passed on to people who need them. Since 2022 alone, volunteers have restored 83 garden tools to working order, sharpened 28 knives, mended 20 kitchen items and repaired 10 bikes, alongside furniture, toys, a music box and more.
What keeps 139 people coming back since Covid isn't just the free repairs. It's the two hours of unhurried conversation that comes with them, and the small, specific satisfaction of someone leaving able to say "we now know how to sharpen our own tools."
The volunteers' own honest admission: getting the word out remains harder than doing the repairs. Community knowledge like this doesn't advertise itself.
The X-factor is exactly that word: connection. Every fixed item comes with a fixed relationship attached.
