Tidy Towns and Cities Environment Category Finalist - Porous Lane: Clifton Hill Tree-growth project
Under three pairs of parking bays in Clifton Hill, something unusual is happening: old tyres are helping trees grow three times faster.
Porous Lane, working with the City of Yarra, Sustainability Victoria and the University of Melbourne, laid 80 square metres of permeable pavement made from about 240 recycled tyres and crushed rock. Instead of shedding stormwater straight into the drains like ordinary asphalt, the surface lets rain and air pass through to the tree roots below, turning every downpour into passive irrigation.
The results were hard to argue with. Young street trees growing in the treated bays outpaced comparable trees in conventional pavement by roughly three to one, a difference visible enough that councils don't need convincing with spreadsheets, they can just look at the canopy.
What the team learned is that small, well-placed changes beat big new assets. A parking bay is usually just a parking bay. This one also filters runoff, waters a tree and keeps waste tyres out of a lower-value disposal pathway, all while still holding a car.
The X-factor is that it's boring in exactly the right way: no new infrastructure, no behaviour change required from residents, just a smarter version of a surface every street already has.
