EPA Waste Prevention and Reduction Finalist - 2026 Tidy Towns Awards: The Fabric Restore
Three people, within two months of each other, asked A Fitting Connection the same question in 2022: what do you do with a deceased relative's entire fabric collection when nobody in the family sews?
That question became The Fabric ReStore, Melbourne's only dedicated shop for donated fabric and sewing supplies, now based in Eaglemont. What started operating out of a borrowed room at Banyule Nillumbik Tech School, rehoming just 9kg of textiles a month, has grown fast: 100kg a month by 2025 from an East Ivanhoe shopfront, and since moving into a bigger Eaglemont space in April 2026, 280kg a month and climbing. More than 1,850kg of textile waste has been diverted to recycling along the way, all while operating under donation limits because demand still outpaces the shop's storage capacity.
Running the numbers taught the founders something they hadn't expected: donations consistently arrive at roughly double the rate they can rehome them, and a chunk of what comes in is 1980s and 90s polyester nobody wants, expensive to recycle and hard to politely decline. They've since narrowed donation guidelines toward natural fibres and built an online shop and regional pop-up program to grow their customer base without straining the physical space further.
The X-factor is what fabric actually carries with it: not just material, but memory. A quilt stitched through someone's winters doesn't get discarded here. It gets found by whoever needs it next.
