Zero Plastics Australia - 2026 Tidy Towns Litter Finalist

Zero Plastics Australia has recycled 4.8 million plastic lids into more than 250,000 finished products, sold to the likes of Officeworks, Sea Life and Zoos Victoria, all designed and manufactured from a workshop in Ballarat.
The founder built the entire operation from scratch: sourcing the supply of single-use lids, buying and learning to run the recycling machines, then teaching himself to design and make the moulds needed to turn ground-up plastic into pens, clipboards, jewellery and custom-branded products. The venture started after a health scare in his early thirties led him to step back from his studies and think hard about what he wanted to leave behind for his two young sons.
More than 8,600 students across over 100 schools have now been through the company's education sessions, watching the entire recycling process rather than being told about it secondhand. That transparency is deliberate. The founder has found that people are willing to choose a sustainable product, but only once it looks good, works properly and is affordable. Sustainability credentials come after that, not instead of it.
The X-factor is honesty about how the sausage actually gets made: no vague "recycled plastic" claims, just an open workshop where anyone can watch a lid become a bracelet.
